French Vogue does a black issue and then does an editorial in blackface? There's no excuse at all really for the insensitivity or ignorance that this displays. Like they said over at Jezebel, as an American, photog Steven Klein should have seen a red flag to the shaky ground that need not be charted.

If not Klein, Roitfeld and co. should have thought something of a whole issue without any black models, save for the one in blackface...I'm sorry. That doesn't count...and we're not amused.

NOTE: Then later in the shoot, they go from a studio to a location and paint her white, which gets all cracked and gross. Blah! See the rest here.

I had such a big debate about this. I totally agree with you Sammykins. I saw your post after I posted and linked to your blog and your reaction. Its about the racial insensitivity esp since the photog is american. Although France's race relations aren't the same as the history our country has endured there are key players in this that could've stepped about and articulated the insensitivity of this shoot. If you want to just even go beyond the black face it's also that there are capable, beautiful black models that could've done the shoot if the purpose was to highlight the beauty of "black" skin. UGH...so many thoughts.

This is really tacky and offensive. Why would any sensible person think this is ok? Vogue continues to show itself to be an irrelevant, anachronistic publication. I look forward to the day when it goes out of business.

Mac cosmetics did the same thing too back in May of this year...for their Style Warriors collection. They painted the asian model with brown skin and an afro but no one seemed to notice
